The book Merchants of Deceit: Opium, American Fortune & the China Trade is a historical fiction which details the life of Samuel Russell, a tradesman in the 19th century who built a company in China that sold goods made in New England. This turned out not to be a profitable venture, and Russell switched to the more lucrative opium trade.
