The Assam district lies in a river valley at 200' elevation and in a jungle-like tropical environment. This produces large, thick tealeaves that, due to their heartiness, can be processed in a manner to produce bold black tea with the dark reddish-brown broth color that oxidized (Black) Indian Assam black tea Tea is known for.
